IRON-RICH SHILAJIT AND ANEMIA

hilajit is considered as one of the wonder medicines of Ayurveda. Neither a plant nor animal substance, it is a mineral resin that oozes from the rocks of the Himalayas. Shilajit is widely used in the preparation of Ayurvedic medicines and is regarded as one of the most important ingredients in Ayurvedic system of medicine. Of the many wonders shilajit is known to be capable of, an important one is its high levels of iron. Shilajit is notable as one of the richest sources of humic acid and iron, making it an effective natural supplement to boost iron levels, which can help relieve some symptoms of anemia and restore hemoglobin levels closer to the normal range. However, it is important to explore this option with a doctor before taking supplements.

WHAT IS ANEMIA?

Anemia is the most common blood condition in the North America. It affects almost 6% of the population. Women, young children, and people with long-term diseases are more likely to have anemia.

Let’s take a look at what is anemia, specifically iron deficiency anemia.

Anemia is a condition in which you lack enough healthy red blood cells to carry adequate oxygen to your body's tissues. Having anemia is also referred to as low hemoglobin which can make you feel tired and weak.

There are many forms of anemia, each with its own cause. Anemia can be temporary or long term and can range from mild to severe. In most cases, anemia has more than one cause.

Types

  1. Aplastic anemia
  2. Iron deficiency anemia
  3. Sickle cell anemia
  4. Thalassemia
  5. Vitamin deficiency anemia

Symptoms

Anemia signs and symptoms vary depending on the cause and severity of anemia. Depending on the causes of your anemia, you might have no symptoms.

Signs and symptoms, if they do occur, might include:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Weakness
  3. Pale or yellowish skin
  4. Irregular heartbeats
  5. Shortness of breath
  6. Dizziness or lightheadedness
  7. Chest pain
  8. Cold hands and feet
  9. Headaches

At first, anemia can be so mild that you don't notice it. But symptoms worsen as anemia worsens.

IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:

Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia — a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues.

As the name implies, iron deficiency anemia is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, your body can't produce enough of a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen (hemoglobin). As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath.

Usually iron deficiency anemia can be corrected with iron supplementation. However, sometimes additional tests or treatments for iron deficiency anemia are necessary; especially if your doctor suspects that you're bleeding internally. Before starting any supplementation it is better to consult your physician.

Natural treatment for anemia:

Anemia treatment involves the use of medications, iron supplements, and even blood transfusions depending on the type of anemia and severity of the condition. Most of these conventional treatments come with their own set of risks, making natural treatments a useful aid to dealing with anemia.

Ayurvedic anemia treatment is based on literature accumulated over millennia and it provides us with a variety of natural treatments including, lifestyle changes and dietary modifications to include hemoglobin rich foods. However, the most powerful anemia remedy from Ayurveda is the natural ingredient of Shilajit.

WHY SHILAJIT?

Shilajit is described as a product of numerous minerals including gold, silver, copper, iron, lead and zinc in its composition. Ayurvedic medicine is involved in many disease conditions that have been traditionally treated with extracts of shilajit and other humic substances containing high levels of Fe (e.g., arthritis and asthma) and they are also used for anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic and iron deficiency anemia. Iron has long been considered important for the body. This is why it is particularly helpful in the most common type of anemia, which is iron deficiency anemia.

Iron deficiency anemia symptoms are known to include heart arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat, headaches, fatigue, and coldness in the extremities. Regular Shilajit supplementation can help to reduce the severity and frequency of such symptoms.

Shilajit is safe:

A research was undertaken by Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy University. The research was made in rats, since extended human laboratory testing was not yet made, which gave some interesting results. For the experiment albino rats were divided into four groups. Group I received vehicle and group II, III and IV received 500, 2 500 and 5 000 mg/kg of shilajit, respectively. The result showed that there were no significant changes in iron level of treated groups when compared with control.

The research determined the effect of long term usage of Shilajit for iron deficiency. The overload iron due to long term supplementing can cause undesirable side effect or toxicity. The excess iron is distributed throughout the body and slowly accumulates in several organs, including heart, liver, spleen, and skin. Ferritin is a unique iron storage protein containing 24 storage proteins. When excess dietary iron is absorbed, the body produces more ferritin. Ferritin is greatly abundant in the heart and liver, therefore there is a large amount in these organs, and iron rushes to these organs for storage. The present study data suggests that long term use of shilajit did not show any toxicity and the iron content of shilajit almost has the same level in all the dose level. Hence, it can be considered being normal.

The result suggests that shilajit, is safe for long term use as a dietary supplement for a number of disorders like iron deficiency anemia.

In addition to helping directly treat anemia and iron deficiency, while also raising energy levels, Shilajit offers other benefits for anemia patients. Weakness, low immunity, and susceptibility to infections are common problems in anemia and shilajit works as a natural immunomodulatory ingredient. This may also be on account of its complex nutraceutical profile, which is thought to enhance immunity, while also directly protecting against certain infectious agents.
